Abstract
Abstract A method of fusing a joint between two bones, comprising boring a hole through one of the bones across the joint therebetween and into the other bone, placing the leading end of a screw into the hole, where the screw has a threaded region having a pitch that is larger toward a leading end of the screw and smaller toward a trailing end of the screw, and driving the screw into the bone until the threaded region spans the joint.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim
82 words
A method of fusing a joint between two bones, comprising: boring a hole through one of the bones across the joint therebetween and into the other bone; placing the leading end of a screw into the hole, where the screw has a single continuous threaded region having a pitch that is larger toward a leading end of the screw and smaller toward a trailing end of the screw; and driving the screw into the bone until the treaded region spans the joint.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
82 words
A method of fusing a joint between two bones, comprising: boring a hole through one of the bones across the joint therebetween and into the other bone; placing the leading end of a screw into the hole, where the screw has a single continuous threaded region having a pitch that is larger toward a leading end of the screw and smaller toward a trailing end of the screw; and driving the screw into the bone until the treaded region spans the joint.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
12 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the joint is an ankle.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
12 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the joint is phalangeal joint.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
14 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the screw includes an unthreaded leading end.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
14 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the screw includes an unthreaded trailing end.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
31 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the thread has a depth that is greater near the leading end of the screw and smaller toward the trailing end of the screw.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
23 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the thread has an outside diameter that tapers over at least the first few thread revolutions.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
19 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the thread has a region of constant diameter toward the trailing end.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
22 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the pitch is approximately fifty-percent larger toward the leading end than toward the trailing end.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
25 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the outside diameter of the threads has a conical truncation at the leading end of the threaded region.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
26 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the thread has a land, and the land is larger near the leading end than near the trailing end.
