Abstract

Abstract A device and method of closing an incision or puncture in a patient by inserting a vessel plug into the incision or puncture until the distal end of the vessel plug is adjacent to the outer lumen of the blood vessel or target organ so that the vessel plug does not obstruct the flow of fluid through the blood vessel or target organ. The precise positioning of the vessel plug in the incision or puncture is accomplished through the use of a balloon catheter or a cylindrical insertion assembly having a proximal plunger member associated therewith.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 132 words
A closure device for sealing an incision formed in the body of a patient wherein the incision extends from the skin of the patient; through the lumen of a blood vessel and into the blood vessel of the patient, said closure device including a plug member comprising: an elongate and generally cylindrical vessel plug which is formed of a bioabsorbable material and has distal and proximal end portions and said vessel plug has a lengthwise dimension sufficient to be received in the incision such that said distal end portion is positioned at a first predetermined position in the incision proximally of the lumen of the blood vessel of the patient and said proximal end portion is positioned proximally thereof to obstruct the flow of blood from the blood vessel into the incision.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 132 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 36 words
The closure device of claim 1 wherein said distal end portion of said vessel plug is oriented at an angle of approximately 25 to 45 degrees with respect to said lengthwise dimension of said vessel plug.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 44 words
The closure device of claim 1 wherein said distal end portion of said vessel plug is contoured to conform to the outer lumen of the blood vessel and said proximal end portion is positioned in the incision formed in the body of the patient.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 21 words
The closure device of claim 1 wherein said vessel plug is constructed of a biodegradable material having a radiopaque material therein.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 21 words
The closure device of claim 1 wherein said vessel plug is constructed of a biodegradable material having a clotting agent therein.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 131 words
A closure device for sealing an incision formed in the body of a patient wherein the incision extends from the skin of the patient; through the lumen of a blood vessel and into the blood vessel of the patient, said closure including a plug member comprising: a bioabsorbable vessel plug having distal and proximal end portions and said vessel plug has a lengthwise dimension between said distal and proximal end portions such that said distal end portion is positioned at a first predetermined position in the incision adjacent to the outer surface of the lumen of the blood vessel of the patient and said proximal end portion is positioned adjacent to the outer surface skin of the patient to obstruct the flow of blood from the blood vessel into the incision.
Claim 8
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 39 words
The closure device of claim 6 wherein said vessel plug has a first diameter sized to be inserted into the incision and a second diameter sufficient to obstruct the flow of blood from the blood vessel into the incision.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 36 words
The closure device of claim 7 wherein said distal end portion of said vessel plug is oriented at an angle of approximately 25 to 45 degrees with respect to the lengthwise dimension of said vessel plug.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 43 words
The closure device of claim 7 wherein said distal end portion of said vessel plug is contoured to conform to the outer lumen of the blood vessel and said proximal end is positioned in the incision formed in the body of the patient.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 97 words
A closure device for sealing an incision formed in the body of a patient wherein the incision extends from the skin of the patient; through the lumen of a blood vessel and into the blood vessel of the patient, said closure device including a plug member comprising: an elongate vessel plug having distal and proximal end portions and said distal end portion and said proximal end portion being spaced apart a sufficient distance in the incision and said vessel plug having a diameter sufficient to obstruct the flow of blood from the blood vessel into the incision.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 97 words
A closure device for sealing an incision formed in the body of a patient wherein the incision extends from the skin of the patient; through the lumen of a blood vessel and into the blood vessel of the patient, said closure device including a plug member comprising: an elongate vessel plug having distal and proximal end portions and said distal end portion and said proximal end portion being spaced apart a sufficient distance in the incision and said vessel plug having a diameter sufficient to obstruct the flow of blood from the blood vessel into the incision.
