Abstract

Abstract A method of treating heart failure is disclosed in which, without removing the damaged heart, implantation of prosthetic blood-pumping means within the natural heart sustains its function. The invention includes electrically-powered positive displacement pumps, muscle-powered pumps, and electrically-powered rotary hydrodynamic pumps sufficiently miniaturized and adopted to function within the heart. The invention also includes surgical connectors and surgical methods that permit intraventricular artificial hearts to be effectively applied.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 90 words
A method of surgical implantation of at least one prosthetic blood pump within the heart comprised of: creating surgical access via surgical incisions to at least one of the four chambers of the heart such that the major coronary arteries are preserved; suturing via suture lines one or more connectors to permit attachment of the blood pump within the heart; testing the suture lines and repairing any leaks; securely attaching the blood pump to the connectors; removing any air trapped within the blood pump; initiating pumping; repairing the surgical incisions.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 90 words
A method of surgical implantation of at least one prosthetic blood pump within the heart comprised of: creating surgical access via surgical incisions to at least one of the four chambers of the heart such that the major coronary arteries are preserved; suturing via suture lines one or more connectors to permit attachment of the blood pump within the heart; testing the suture lines and repairing any leaks; securely attaching the blood pump to the connectors; removing any air trapped within the blood pump; initiating pumping; repairing the surgical incisions.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 52 words
The method of surgical implantation of prosthetic blood pumps within the heart described in claim 1 in which the size of one or more chambers of the heart into which the components of the artificial heart system are implanted is enlarged using a muscle graft or split-thickness flap of cardiac muscle tissue.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 45 words
The method of surgical implantation of at least one prosthetic blood pump within the heart as described in claim 1 in which inflow anastomosis is made within the heart, and outflow anastomosis is made outside the heart to either the aorta or the pulmonary artery.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 45 words
The method of surgically implanting an intraventricular artificial heart comprising: excising the natural heart from the patient; suturing the intraventricular artificial heart and any requisite prosthetic valves within said excised natural heart; reimplanting the natural heart together with the intraventricular artificial heart into the patient.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 45 words
The method of surgically implanting an intraventricular artificial heart comprising: excising the natural heart from the patient; suturing the intraventricular artificial heart and any requisite prosthetic valves within said excised natural heart; reimplanting the natural heart together with the intraventricular artificial heart into the patient.
Claim 7
Independent Claim 71 words
A method of treating heart disease by supporting the pumping function of the heart of a patient in need thereof comprising implanting an electric motor together with other components of a blood pumping device into the natural heart of said patient and applying electric energy to the motor from a source outside the heart to pump all or part of the blood flow required to sustain the life of the patient.
Claim 8
Independent Claim 71 words
A method of treating heart disease by supporting the pumping function of the heart of a patient in need thereof comprising implanting an electric motor together with other components of a blood pumping device into the natural heart of said patient and applying electric energy to the motor from a source outside the heart to pump all or part of the blood flow required to sustain the life of the patient.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 66 words
The method of treating heart disease by supporting the pumping function of the heart of a patient in need thereof as described in claim 5 in which the outflow of the blood pumping device is channelled into the aorta of the patient's heart at a position distal to the natural aortic valve or into the pulmonary artery at a position distal to the natural pulmonic valve.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 75 words
A method of treating heart disease by supporting the pumping function of the heart of a patient in need thereof via major surgery by implanting a rotary blood pumping device into one or more of the ventricles or atria of the natural heart of said patient, and applying energy to the device from a source outside the heart to pump all or part of the blood flow required to sustain the life of the patient.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 75 words
A method of treating heart disease by supporting the pumping function of the heart of a patient in need thereof via major surgery by implanting a rotary blood pumping device into one or more of the ventricles or atria of the natural heart of said patient, and applying energy to the device from a source outside the heart to pump all or part of the blood flow required to sustain the life of the patient.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 66 words
The method of treating heart disease by supporting the pumping function of the heart of a patient in need thereof as described in claim 7 in which the outflow of the blood pumping device is channelled into the aorta of the patient's heart at a position distal to the natural aortic valve or into the pulmonary artery at a position distal to the natural pulmonic valve.
