Abstract
Abstract A CENTRIFUGAL BLOOD PUMP AND METHOD OF PUMPING BLOOD TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO A FAILING HEART. THE PUMP IS INTENDED TO BE IMPLANTED AND IS PROVIDED WITH A MAGNETIC DRIVE SYSTEM WHICH PERMITS A SYNCHRONOUS MAGNETIC COUPLING WITH AN OUTSIDE POWER UNIT WITH NO WIRES OR TUBES THROUGH THE SKIN. THE PUMP HAS BUT A SINGLE MOVING PART. IT IS LUBRICATED BY THE PUMPED BLOOD AND PROVIDES AN IDEFINITE LIFETIME OF SERVICE-FREE PERFORMANCE.
