Surgical stapler providing variable degree of staple closure
Abstract
Abstract A magazine (20) fed, trigger (12) driven surgical stapler (1) and a method of using it to close a surgical incision. The stapler (1) has an anvil (66) and a staple driving die (38), characterized by means (as adjustable stop (18)) for controlling movement of the staple driving die (38) so that staples (26) can be deformed to anyone of the range of closed positions, either in one step or in a second embodiment via an intermediate position. The anvil (66) is pivotable to a position clear of the staples (26). Forceps (78) to draw the edges of the incision together may be attached to the stapler (1). A staple blank (26) with a concave back (129), arms (137) extending the concave shape of the back and pointed lower arms (131) extending downwardly and inwardly from the upper arms (137), which on deformation around the anvil will adopt a hexagonal configuration.
