guide means adjacent the rearward portion of said handle to coordinate with and provide tension to said guide pin* such that on partially compressing said trigger said guide means provide tension on said guide pin and said ratchet engages said pawl and on comptetely compres- sing said trigger, said guide pin crossesover the top of said guide means causing said ratchet to be disengaged from said pawl. 4. A surgical stapling control means comprising: a handle; a triager pivotally attached and on compression in- ternal to said handle; a staple forming means contained in the forward portion of said handle; a multi-toothed ratchet on the rearward portion of said handle; a pawl attached to the rearward portion of said trigger to coordinate with said ratchet; at least one guide pin attached to the initial end of said pawl; guide means adjacent the rearward portion of said handle to coordinate with and provide tension to said guide pin such that on partially compressing said trigger said guide means provide tension on said guide pin and said ratchet engages said pawl and on completely compressing said trigger, said guide pin crosses over the top of said guide means causing said ratchet to be disengaged from said pawl. A stapling control means of Claim 3 or 4 wherein said guide means are two cams attached to each side of said handle. 6. A stapling control means of Claim 5 where- in two guide pins coordinate with said cams. 7. A stapling control means of Claim 6 wherein said staple forming means is: a track; a plurality of staples loaded and staple advanc- ing means carried on said track; a track cover mounted on said track; an anvil surface mounted and a first bias means movably mounted on the cover, the said anvil surface term- inating in a perpendicular flange; a staple adjacent said anvil surface; a retainer spring mounted on said anvil surface and separating said staple from said flange; a guide block nounted on said cover adjacent said anvil surface; and a forming blade and a second bias means movably mounted on said guide means, said forming blade and said trigger having ccordinating surfaces. 8. A stapling control means of Claim 6 where- in said staple forming means is: a track; a leaf spring on the terminal end of said track; a plurality of staples loaded and staple advancing means carried on said track; a track cover mounted on said track; an anvil surface mounted and a first bias means movably mounted on the cover, the said anvil surface term- inating in a perpendicular flange; a staple adjacent said anvil surface separated from said flange by said leaf spring; a guide block mounted on said cover adjacent said anvil surface; and a forming blade and a second bias means movably mounted on said guide block, said forming blade and said trigger having coordinating surfaces. 9. A stapling instrament of Claim 1 or 2 or 7 or 8 containing ar indicator having an initial end visible in said handle and a terminal end movably mounted on said advancing means such that on releasing said trigger, said first bias means pulls the terminal end and thus moves the initial end of said indicator to indicate the number of staples remaining. engages the pawl. un completely compressing the trigger, the guide pin crosses over the top of the guide means causing the ratchet to be disengaged from the pawl. -17- A method of closing a wound comprising: joining the adjacent edges of said wound; placing a stapling instrument of Claim 1 or 2 cr 7 or 8 adjacent said wound; compressing said trigger into said handle; anL releasing said trigger and advancing said instru- ment, whereby a formed staple is placed between said'edges. 11. A method of connecting skin or fascia comn- prising: joining the adjacent edges of said skin or fascia; placing a stapling instrument of Claim 1 or 2 or 7 or 8 adjacent said skin or fascia; compressing said trigger into said handle; and releasing said trigger and advancing said instru- ment, whereby a formed staple is place between said edges. 12. A surgical stapling instrument package com- prising a sterile enclosure and therein a stapling instrument of Claim 2 or 4 or 6 or 8 or 9.
