Abstract A medical stapler (10) adapted to bend a staple (24) closed around an anvil (29) into a generally loop-like shape. The stapler (10) includes a mechanism for retracting the anvil (29) from within the closed staple (24) as a ram (26) that closed the staple (24) moves away from the anvil (29).
