Abstract

Abstract An implant, in particular an intervertebral prosthesis, which consists of an elongated elastic body which is form-elastic and takes on the form of a spiral S in the force-free state. The spiral can be drawn by a reverse winding up into an insertion instrument which is only insubstantially larger in the insertion region than the cross-section of the elongated elastic body in order to reach the inner space of an intervertebral disc through a small opening in the annulus fibrosus and to push in and sever off the self-winding spiral when the interior is filled. This has the advantage that inner spaces of differing sizes can be filled with the same spiral.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 85 words
An intervertebral prosthesis for replacement of the nucleus of an intervertebral disc, the prosthesis having an elongated elastic body, which is form-elastic and which rolls up by itself into the form of at least one plane spiral in the force-free state, wherein the spiral has an approximately cylindrical middle piece at its center to which the form-elastic body is joined at the side via a transition member of small width, in order to produce a form-fitted spiral essentially without intervening spaces in the force-free state.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 85 words
An intervertebral prosthesis for replacement of the nucleus of an intervertebral disc, the prosthesis having an elongated elastic body, which is form-elastic and which rolls up by itself into the form of at least one plane spiral in the force-free state, wherein the spiral has an approximately cylindrical middle piece at its center to which the form-elastic body is joined at the side via a transition member of small width, in order to produce a form-fitted spiral essentially without intervening spaces in the force-free state.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 25 words
A prosthesis in accordance with claim 1 wherein the body has a substantially rectangular cross-section whose height corresponds to the intervertebral region to be replaced.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 28 words
A prosthesis in accordance with claim 1 wherein the spiral has at least one planar surface at at least one of a base surface and a top surface.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 20 words
A prosthesis in accordance with claim 1 wherein the spiral has at least one outwardly arched base or cover surface.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 42 words
A prosthesis in accordance with claim 2 wherein the height-to-width ratio of the cross-section of the form-elastic body is formed at least at the center of the spiral in such a manner that the body does not cant or tilt under load.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 25 words
A prosthesis in accordance with claim 2 wherein the width of the body is greater at the inside of the spiral than at the outside.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 28 words
A prosthesis in accordance with claim 1 wherein the body consists of sterilizable material whose deformation properties correspond essentially to those of an intervertebral disc to be replaced.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 66 words
A prosthesis in accordance with claim 1 wherein when the body is in spiral form, it takes on an external diameter which substantially completely fills out the space within the annulus fibrosus, with the external diameter lying in a range between 20 and 30 mm and with a height in a range between 5 to 10 mm; and wherein the spiral has at least 3 turns.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 28 words
A prosthesis in accordance with claim 1 wherein an additional stiffening means is provided at the free end of the spiral via which shear stresses can be transmitted.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 19 words
A prosthesis in accordance with claim 1 wherein X-ray markers in the form of spheres or threads are provided.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 19 words
A prosthesis in accordance with claim 7 wherein the sterilizable material is either a polyurethane or a polyurethane-silicon mixture.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 23 words
A prosthesis in accordance with claim 9 wherein the stiffening means has a band-like form and is made of either plastic or metal.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 15 words
A prosthesis in accordance with claim 12 wherein the stiffening means is made of titanium.
