Abstract

Abstract Suture devices, primarily for use in endoscopic surgery, include a suture needle made of bioabsorbable material for pulling a length of suture material through bodily tissue allowing the suture needle to be inadvertently or intentionally left in the tissue, and a suture needle having a length of suture material attached thereto with a contractible loop or passage at the proximal end of the suture material to allow the suture needle to be passed therethrough, the loop or passage contracting to clamp or grip the suture material to function similar to a conventional tied suture knot.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 19
Claim 1
Independent Claim 85 words
A suture device for joining bodily tissue comprising a length of suture material; and a suture needle having a distal end with a sharp penetrating point and a proximal end with means for engaging said length of suture material such that said suture needle can penetrate tissue to pull said length of suture material into the tissue to leave said length of suture material in the tissue, said suture needle being made of bioabsorbable material whereby said suture needle can be absorbed by the body.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 85 words
A suture device for joining bodily tissue comprising a length of suture material; and a suture needle having a distal end with a sharp penetrating point and a proximal end with means for engaging said length of suture material such that said suture needle can penetrate tissue to pull said length of suture material into the tissue to leave said length of suture material in the tissue, said suture needle being made of bioabsorbable material whereby said suture needle can be absorbed by the body.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 39 words
A suture device as recited in claim 1 wherein said proximal end of said suture needle is molded around an end of said length of suture material to securely attach said suture needle to said length of suture material.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 38 words
A suture device as recited in claim 1 wherein said suture needle has a bore in said proximal end and said length of suture material has an end received in said bore and welded to said suture needle.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 100 words
A suture device as recited in claim 1 wherein said suture needle has an opening in said proximal end and said length of suture material extends through said opening to form a double length of suture material for engaging the tissue to be sutured, said double length of suture material terminating at an enlarged proximal end, and further comprising a ring disposed around said double length of suture material and movable therealong to define with said lengths of suture material and said enlarged proximal end a loop through which said suture needle can be passed to knot said suture material
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 91 words
A suture device as recited in claim 1 wherein said length of suture material has an enlarged distal end, and said proximal end of said suture needle has a channel formed therein of a size to receive said enlarged distal end and a mouth communicating with said channel having a width less than said enlarged end but greater than the diameter of a distal portion of said length of suture material and said enlarged end is received in said channel to attach said length of suture material to said suture needle.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 30 words
A suture device as recited in claim 1 wherein said bioabsorbable material of said suture needle is rigid and said length of suture material is formed of flexible bioabsorbable material.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 111 words
A suture device as recited in claim 1 wherein said proximal end of said suture needle is hollow and holes extend through said proximal end at an angle from inside to outside toward said proximal end, and said length of suture material has an end with whisker-like filaments extending angularly therefrom toward said proximal end, and said length of suture material has an end with whisker-like filaments extending angularly therefrom away from said end, said end of said length of suture material being received in said proximal end of said suture needle with said whisker-like filaments received in said holes to attach said length of suture material to said suture needle.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 49 words
A suture device as recited in claim 1 wherein said length of suture material includes an end having protrusion means extending therefrom and said proximal end of said suture needle has means therein for receiving said protrusion means to attach said length of suture material to said suture needle.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 27 words
A suture device as recited in claim 8 wherein said protrusion means includes threads and said proximal end receiving means includes threads receiving said protrusion means threads.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 32 words
A suture device as recited in claim 8 wherein said protrusion means includes a ball-shaped end and said proximal end receiving means includes a spherical recess expandable to receive said ball-shaped end.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 29 words
A suture device as recited in claim 1 wherein said length of suture material has a proximal end defining a passage through which said suture needle can be passed.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 22 words
A suture device as recited in claim 11 wherein said passage is formed by two portions of said length of suture material.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 28 words
A suture device as recited in claim 11 wherein said proximal end of said length of suture material includes means having an expandable opening therethrough defining said passage.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 23 words
A suture device as recited in claim 13 wherein said proximal end of said length of suture material is made of elastic material.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 52 words
A suture device as recited in claim 1 wherein said suture needle has a distal portion adjacent said distal end, a proximal portion adjacent said proximal end and a central portion between said distal portion and said proximal portion, said distal portion being rigid and said central and proximal portions being flexible.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 52 words
A suture device as recited in claim 1 wherein said suture needle has a distal portion adjacent said distal end, a proximal portion adjacent said proximal end and a central portion between said distal portion and said proximal portion, said distal and proximal portions being rigid and said central portion being flexible.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 52 words
A suture device as recited in claim 1 wherein said suture needle has a distal portion adjacent said distal end, a proximal portion adjacent said proximal end and a central portion between said distal portion and said proximal portion, said distal and central portions being rigid and said proximal portion being flexible.
Claim 19
