Abstract

Abstract A contrast agent for investigating the gastrointestinal tract by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) scanning. The contrast agent comprises a complex formed between a) an amino di- or poly-phosphonate in which the phosphonate groups comprise different carbon atoms, and b) a paramagnetic metal ion, in substantially permanent association with an insoluble particulate carrier. Suitable carriers include, for example, pharmaceutically acceptable, substantially physiologically insoluble, particulate phosphate carriers.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 55 words
A contrast agent for investigating the gastrointestinal tract by NMR scanning which comprises a complex formed between a) an amino di- or poly-phosphonate in which the phosphonate groups comprise different carbon atoms, and b) a paramagnetic metal ion, in substantially permanent association with an insoluble particulate carrier, provided that said carrier is other than hydroxyapatite.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 55 words
A contrast agent for investigating the gastrointestinal tract by NMR scanning which comprises a complex formed between a) an amino di- or poly-phosphonate in which the phosphonate groups comprise different carbon atoms, and b) a paramagnetic metal ion, in substantially permanent association with an insoluble particulate carrier, provided that said carrier is other than hydroxyapatite.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 17 words
A contrast agent as claimed in claim 1, wherein the di- or poly-phosphonate contains the group -N(CH₂PO₃H₂)₂.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 48 words
A contrast agent as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the poly-phosphonate has the general formula NX₂CH₂PO₃H₂, where the two groups X are the same or different and each is -CH₂PO₃H₂ or -(CH₂) n N(CH₂PO₃H₂)₂, and n is up to 10, or a non-toxic salt thereof.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 14 words
A contrast agent as claimed in claim 3, wherein the poly-phosphonate is ethylenediamine tetramethylenephosphonate.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
A contrast agent as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the poly-phosphonate is metaxylenediamine tetramethylene-phosphonate.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 21 words
A contrast agent as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5, wherein the paramagnetic metal ion is Gd(III) or Fe(III).
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
A contrast agent as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6, wherein the insoluble particulate carrier is a pharmaceutically acceptable, substantially physiologically insoluble, particulate phosphate carrier.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 22 words
A contrast agent as claimed in claim 7, wherein said carrier is of the M-P₂O₅-H₂O type, where M is a divalent cation.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 12 words
A contrast agent as claimed in claim 8, wherein M is calcium.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 27 words
A contrast agent as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6, wherein the insoluble particulate carrier is aluminium hydroxide, aluminium oxide, magnesium hydroxide or magnesium trisilicate.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 34 words
A contrast agent as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the complex is present in solution at a concentration of from 1 to 50 mM with respect to the paramagnetic metal ion.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 20 words
A contrast agent comprising a paramagnetic metal ion insolubilised on the surface of an insoluble particulate material by chemical means.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 20 words
A contrast agent comprising a paramagnetic metal ion insolubilised on the surface of an insoluble particulate material by chemical means.
