Abstract

Method for making a multi-layer prosthesis of blood vessels (10). Each layer is made up of bio-replaceable materials comprising the materials produced by contacting collagen with an aminopoly-saccharide and subsequently causing covalent cross-linking of the resulting polymer, polymers of hydroxyacetic acid and the like. Cross flow filtration molding and wet extrusion molding are two methods which are particularly useful for forming the inner layer (12) of the blood vessel prosthesis (10), the outer layer (14) of the prosthesis blood vessels (10) preferably being formed by cold drying a dispersion of the bioreplaceable material on the interior layer (s). The prosthesis of blood vessels described here (10) is a multi-layer structure, each layer of which has porosity and other physico-chemical and mechanical characteristics selected to maximize the efficiency of the blood vessel. The prosthesis (10) initially functions as a thrombo-resistant line having mechanical properties which adapt to those of the adjacent natural blood vessel. Subsequently, the prosthesis performs the functions of a regeneration template, which is replaced by a new connective tissue which is formed during the healing process following the fixation of the prosthesis.
