Claim 1
Independent Claim
169 words
A replacement semilunar heart valve for placement in a ventricular outflow artery of a patient, comprising: a thin and flexible wall portion with diametrically opposing sides; an inlet end and an outlet end, the inlet end sized and adapted to be circumferentially secured substantially at a valve annulus formed by removing a native semilunar heart valve; three securement locations adjacent the outlet end and spaced from each other, the securement locations adapted to be attached to a wall of the artery; and three unconstrained regions between the securement locations, each of the unconstrained regions adapted to flex inwardly into and out of engagement with others of the unconstrained regions in response to force by blood pressure, said unconstrained regions adapted to cause the valve to be normally open and to close as the heart cycle changes from systole to diastole, wherein the replacement semilunar heart valve is derived from one or more of the following materials: synthetic material, pericardial sac, fascia lata, intestinal tissue segment, or animal tissue culture.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
31 words
A heart valve as in claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the outlet end is adapted to be spaced from the artery wall when the valve is open.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
34 words
A heart valve as in claim 1 , wherein the securement locations are positioned so as to engage the artery wall at substantially the same locations vacated by cusps of the removed native valve.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
15 words
A heart valve as in claim 1 , wherein the outlet end is slightly scalloped.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
16 words
A heart valve as in claim 1 , wherein the securement locations out about 120° apart.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
19 words
A heart valve as in claim 1 , additionally comprising longitudinal suture lines substantially aligned with the securement locations.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
19 words
A heart valve as in claim 1 , wherein the wall portion comprises pinched junctures at the securement locations.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
15 words
A heart valve as in claim 7 , additionally comprising reinforcements adjacent the securement locations.
