Said conduit capable of defining a continuously open blood flow path between said openings of said first and second ends, said conduit being sufficiently rigid such that when placed within said human heart wall said blood flow path remains open during both diastole and systole; d. said conduit configured to substantially block flow from leaving said conduit other than through said first and second ends; and e. said conduit includes a reservoir for accumulating blood from said conduit during periods of high blood pressure and for discharging accumulated blood into said conduit during periods of low blood pressure.
Claim 3
Independent Claim 220 words
An apparatus for use in a coronary bypass procedure at a human coronary vessel disposed lying on an exterior of a human heart wall, the apparatus comprising: a hollow blood flow conduit having a first end dimensioned for insertion into and retention within the human heart wall of a heart chamber containing oxygenated blood with an opening of the first end for providing blood-flow communication with blood contained within the chamber; the conduit having a second end disposed at an angle to the first end, the second end dimensioned for insertion into and retention within said human coronary vessel with an opening of the second end positioned and dimensioned for providing blood flow communication with a lumen of the human coronary vessel such that the second end can be substantially axially aligned with the human coronary vessel; the conduit capable of defining a continuously open blood flow path during both diastole and systole between the openings of the first and second ends and at least a portion of the conduit being sufficiently rigid such that when placed within said human heart wall said conduit remains open in response to contraction and relaxation of musculature of the human heart wall and; the conduit has a portion to block flow out of the conduit in a direction axially opposite the second end.
Claim 4
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 15 words
An apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the conduit is a substantially L-shaped, rigid tube.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 120 words
A method for performing a coronary bypass procedure at a coronary vessel disposed lying on an exterior of a heart wall, the method comprising: inserting a hollow conduit through the heart wall where the conduit defines a blood flow path between a heart chamber opening and a vessel opening and with the conduit selected so as to maintain the blood flow path open during both systole and diastole and with the heart chamber opening of the conduit in blood flow communication with the heart chamber; placing the vessel opening of the conduit within the vessel to direct blood to flow from the blood flow path into the vessel in a flow direction generally parallel with an axis of the vessel.
Claim 7
Claim 8
