Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 19
Claim 1
Independent Claim 68 words
A method of preparing collagen from tendon comprising: (a) washing finely divided common digital extensor tendon from which the sheath has been removed in phosphate buffered saline at a pH of about 6.5 to 8.5; (b) extracting collagen from the tendon obtained in step (a) with a weak acid and gentle mechanical action; (c) precipitating the acid-extracted collagen obtained in step (b); and (d) recovering the precipitated collagen.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 68 words
A method of preparing collagen from tendon comprising: (a) washing finely divided common digital extensor tendon from which the sheath has been removed in phosphate buffered saline at a pH of about 6.5 to 8.5; (b) extracting collagen from the tendon obtained in step (a) with a weak acid and gentle mechanical action; (c) precipitating the acid-extracted collagen obtained in step (b); and (d) recovering the precipitated collagen.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the tendon is calf common digital extensor tendon.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 27 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the phosphate buffered saline comprises 0.05M sodium chloride: 2.2 mM sodium phosphate buffer at a ratio of about 1:3 to 1:1.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 11 words
The method of claim 3, wherein the ratio is about 1:3.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the acid is acetic, citric or formic acid.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 11 words
The method of claim 5, wherein the acid is acetic acid.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the acid extracted collagen is precipitated with sodium chloride.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method of claim 7, wherein the sodium chloride is at about 0.6 to 1.8M.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 25 words
The method of claim 1, wherein steps (c) and (d) are accomplished by simultaneous precipitation and aeration, followed by pressure filtration of the precipitated collagen.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the precipitated collagen is recovered by filtration with aeration.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 24 words
The method of claim 1, wherein the yield of collagen is greater than about 4% of the wet weight of the finely divided tendon.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 21 words
A Type I collagen composition comprising collagen extracted from common digital extensor tendon in accordance with the method of claim 1.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 15 words
The collagen composition of claim 12, wherein the tendon is calf common digital extensor tendon.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 26 words
A collagen composition in accordance with claim 12, wherein the collagen extracted is at least about 3% to 6% of the wet weight of the tendon.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 21 words
A tissue equivalent comprising Type I collagen extracted from common digital extensor tendon in accordance with the method of claim 1.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 15 words
The tissue equivalent of claim 15, wherein the tendon is calf common digital extensor tendon.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 16 words
The tissue equivalent of claims 15, wherein the burst strength is at least 200 mm Hg.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 17 words
The tissue equivalent of claim 15, wherein the burst strength is about 110 to 150 mm Hg.
