Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 18
Claim 1
Independent Claim 65 words
A method for delivering radiation having a wavelength of 10.6 microns to a site, comprising the step of using a hollow waveguide wherein the index of refraction of the cladding of said hollow waveguide is less than that of the core of said waveguide at said wavelength and said cladding is a monocrystalline material, to guide said radiation from a source to adjacent said site.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 65 words
A method for delivering radiation having a wavelength of 10.6 microns to a site, comprising the step of using a hollow waveguide wherein the index of refraction of the cladding of said hollow waveguide is less than that of the core of said waveguide at said wavelength and said cladding is a monocrystalline material, to guide said radiation from a source to adjacent said site.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
The method as defined in claim 1 which further comprises the step of using sapphire as said cladding material.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 29 words
The method as defined by claim 1 which further comprises the step of using an air core waveguide wherein said cladding has an index of refraction which is <1.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 32 words
The method as defined in claim 1 which further comprises the step of generating said radiation and wherein said step of generating said radiation is carried out by a CO 2 laser.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 29 words
The method as defined by claim 1 wherein said step of using a hollow waveguide includes using such a waveguide which is uniformly flexible along substantially its full length.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 76 words
The method as defined by claim 1 which further comprises the step of guiding said radiation by a multiple section waveguide which includes a tip section for guiding said radiation to adjacent said site which tip section is separable from the remainder of said waveguide, all of said sections of hollow waveguide being of a monocrystalline material having an index of refraction at said wavelength which is less than that of the core of said waveguide.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
The method as defined by claim 1 which further comprises the step of guiding said radiation generally along the direction of the c-axis of said monocrystalline material.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 37 words
The method as defined by claim 7 which further comprises the step of using said cladding material wherein said cladding material is generally transparent or translucent to visible radiation and itself is a guide for illuminating radiation.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 33 words
The method as defined by claim 8 which further comprises the step of generating illuminating coherent radiation and wherein said step of generating illuminating coherent radiation is carried out by a HeNe laser.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 31 words
The method as defined by claim 10 which further comprises the step of guiding said radiation generally along the direction of the c-axis of the crystalline lattice structure of said sapphire.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 31 words
The method as defined by claim 10 which further comprises the step of guiding said radiation generally along the direction of the c-axis of the crystalline lattice structure of said sapphire.
Claim 13
Independent Claim 54 words
An apparatus for guiding and delivering radiation having a wavelength of 10.6 microns to a site, comprising a hollow waveguide wherein the index of refraction of refraction of the cladding of said hollow waveguide is less than that of the core of said waveguide at said wavelength, and said cladding is a monocrystalline material.
Claim 14
Independent Claim 54 words
An apparatus for guiding and delivering radiation having a wavelength of 10.6 microns to a site, comprising a hollow waveguide wherein the index of refraction of refraction of the cladding of said hollow waveguide is less than that of the core of said waveguide at said wavelength, and said cladding is a monocrystalline material.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 13 words
An apparatus as recited in claim 12 wherein said cladding material is sapphire.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 24 words
An apparatus as recited in claim 13 wherein said sapphire's c-axis of the crystalline lattice structure extends generally in the direction of said guiding.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 20 words
An apparatus as recited in claim 12 wherein said monocrystalline material's c-axis extends generally in the direction of said guiding.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 27 words
An apparatus as recited in claim 12 wherein said cladding material is generally transparent or translucent to visible radiation and itself is a guide for illuminating radiation.
