Abstract

Abstract A method for forming a balloon for use in a balloon catheter by depositing a film over the exterior surface of a substrate. The film includes a plurality of layers in which one of the layers is a polyimide and another is made of a metallic material which heats in response to the application of electromagnetic energy. The substrate is removed to leave a balloon in the desired shape.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim 107 words
A method of forming a balloon for use in a balloon catheter, the method comprising the steps of: providing a substrate having an exterior surface configuration which corresponds to a desired shape of the balloon in a predetermined condition; depositing a film over the exterior surface of the substrate wherein the film is defined by a plurality of layers of substrate coatings, with at least one layer formed from a polyimide polymer material and another layer formed from a metallic material which heats in response to an application of electro-magnetic energy thereto; and removing the substrate within the film to leave a balloon of the desired shape.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 107 words
A method of forming a balloon for use in a balloon catheter, the method comprising the steps of: providing a substrate having an exterior surface configuration which corresponds to a desired shape of the balloon in a predetermined condition; depositing a film over the exterior surface of the substrate wherein the film is defined by a plurality of layers of substrate coatings, with at least one layer formed from a polyimide polymer material and another layer formed from a metallic material which heats in response to an application of electro-magnetic energy thereto; and removing the substrate within the film to leave a balloon of the desired shape.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method of claim 1 wherein removing the substrate comprises: chemically dissolving the substrate.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 12 words
The method of claim 2 wherein the substrate in a glass material.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method of claim 3 wherein the substrate has a central passage extending therethrough.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the substrate has a lower melting temperature than the film, and wherein removing the substrate comprises melting the substrate.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 20 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the plurality of layers have a combined thickness of less than about 0.001 inches.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the film includes an outer layer of anti-friction material.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 25 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the substrate has a proximal waist section, an intermediate section of greater outside diameter, and a distal tip section.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 27 words
The method of claim 8 wherein the intermediate section has an outer surface configuration which corresponds to a desired shape of the balloon in an inflated condition.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 27 words
The method of claim 8 wherein the intermediate section has an outer surface configuration which corresponds to a desired shape in the balloon in a deflated condition.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 18 words
The method of claim 1 and further comprising: curing the polyimide polymer material prior to removing the substrate.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 22 words
The method of claim 11, and further comprising: performing a mechanical forming process on the film after depositing and prior to curing.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 13 words
The method of claim 7 wherein the anti-friction material is a Paralene polymer.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method of claim 1 wherein each layer has a thickness of about 0.0001 inches.
