Abstract
Abstract A method for processing a copper alloy wherein the alloy comprises from 0.2-1.0% beryllium, 1.4-2.2% nickel or cobalt and remainder copper. Said method comprising one or more processing steps and characterized in that said steps conclude with cold working the alloy to an area reduction of at least 99% followed by a batch annealing at a temperature of 750°-950° F. for a period of 1-4 hours.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim
99 words
A method for manufacturing a wire from a copper precipitation hardenable alloy wherein the alloy consisting essentially of about 0.38% beryllium, 1.66% nickel and the remainder copper, said method comprising one or more processing steps and characterized in that said steps conclude with cold working the alloy to a wire and to an area reduction of at least 99% followed by precipitation heat treatment at a temperature of 750°-950° F. for a period of 1-4 hours and wherein the resulting wire has a tensile strength of at least 95,000 psi and an electric conductivity of at least 60% IACS.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
27 words
A method of claim 1 wherein said cold working of at least 99% R.A. is performed directly without prior wire surface treatment or an intermediate annealing process.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
29 words
A method of claim 1 wherein said precipitation heat treatment takes place in a furnace at a temperature of about 880° F. for a time of about 3 hours.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
41 words
A method of claim 1 wherein said processing steps comprise heating said alloy to the solution annealing temperature of 1650°-1800° F. at which most elements of the alloy would be in solution and rapidly quenching said alloy to about room temperature.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
18 words
A method of claim 4 wherein said processing steps further include plating said alloy with nickel or silver.
