Abstract

Abstract The disclosure herein describes a method and apparatus for the removal, by dialysis, of gases physically dissolved in the blood of a person, more particularly a diver or an aviator; the blood is brought into contact, in an exchange cell, with a membrane permeable to gases only; a liquid having high solubility for gases is circulated on the side of the membrane so that the gases dissolved in the blood are made to follow their chemical potential gradient across the membrane into the liquid.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 87 words
A method for the removal, by dialysis, of gases physically dissolved in the blood of a person, such as a diver or an aviator, comprising the steps of: bringing the blood from a cannulated vein of the person into contact in an exchange cell with a membrane permeable to gases only; and circulating a liquid having high solubility for gases on the side of said membrane whereby the gases dissolved in the blood are made to follow their chemical potential gradient across said membrane into said liquid.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 87 words
A method for the removal, by dialysis, of gases physically dissolved in the blood of a person, such as a diver or an aviator, comprising the steps of: bringing the blood from a cannulated vein of the person into contact in an exchange cell with a membrane permeable to gases only; and circulating a liquid having high solubility for gases on the side of said membrane whereby the gases dissolved in the blood are made to follow their chemical potential gradient across said membrane into said liquid.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the circulation of the liquid is done countercurrent to the blood flow.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 14 words
A method as defined in claim 1, wherein said liquid is a perfluorocarbon liquid.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 12 words
A method as defined in claim 3, wherein said liquid is perfluorodecalin.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 12 words
A method as defined in claim 3, wherein said liquid is perfluorotributylamine.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 13 words
A method as defined in claim 1, wherein said liquid is a silicone.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 19 words
A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the blood and the liquid are pumped through the exchange cell.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method as defined in claim 1, further comprising the step of monitoring the flow of blood between the cannulated vein and the membrane.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method as defined in claim 1, further comprising the step of monitoring the liquid as it circulates on the side of the membrane.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 22 words
A method as defined in claim 9, further comprising heating said liquid to a temperature corresponding substantially to that of said blood.
