Abstract
Abstract Bodies made of titanium or its alloys, having surfaces liable to wear, have their wear resistance improved by coating such surfaces with a layer of a metal such as tin or aluminum which has been bombarded with ions of a light species such as nitrogen, carbon, boron, or neon so as to cause the metal to migrate into the titanium or titanium alloy. The modified surface has improved wear resistance and reduced coefficient of friction.

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim
144 words
A workpiece of titanium or an alloy of titanium having a surface treated to improve its wear resistance, said surface having been treated by a process comprising the operations of coating the surface with a layer of a metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum, copper, iron, tin, nickel, platinum, zinc and zirconium, and then subjecting the coated surface to bombardment with ions of a species the mass of which is insufficient to cause a harmful degree of sputtering of the surface during implantation, so as to cause the metal to migrate into the workpiece, in which workpiece the metal layer is no longer on the original workpiece surface but has migrated into the workpiece to form a modified surface which has improved wear resistance and reduced coefficient of friction relative to the original surface or any untreated surface areas of the workpiece.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
13 words
A workpiece according to claim 1 wherein the metal is tin or aluminum.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
32 words
A workpiece according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the bombarding ion species is selected from the group comprising N + , B + , C + and Ne + .
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
14 words
A workpiece according to claim 3 wherein the ion species is N + .
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
34 words
A workpiece according to claim 1 wherein the bombardment with the ion species is continued until a dose of the order of 10 17 ions per cm 2 has been implanted into the workpiece.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
28 words
A workpiece according to claim 1 wherein the temperature of the workpiece is raised to at least 400° C. while it is being bombarded with the ion species.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
17 words
A workpiece according to claim 6 wherein the temperature of the workpiece is raised to 600° C.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
38 words
A workpiece according to claim 6 or claim 7 wherein the bombardment with the ion species is carried out at a power level such as to cause the temperature of the workpiece to rise to the specified level.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
33 words
A workpiece according to claim 1 wherein the workpiece is bombarded with a beam of ions having an energy of 400 kev and a current density of 30 μA per cm 2 .
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
17 words
A workpiece according to claim 1 wherein the coating is by electron beam evaporation in a vacuum.
