In a polymeric composition of the type comprising one or more organic thermoplastic, thermosetting, and/or elastomeric polymeric materials and red phosphorus as a flame retardant, the improvement comprising: at least about 0.05 weight percent based on the total weight of the composition to suppress phosphine evolution of a phosphine suppressant selected from the group consisting of cuprous chloride, cupric chloride, cuprous acetate, cupric acetate, copper metal and mixture thereof.
