Claim 1
Independent Claim
144 words
A diffusor for the controlled delivery of a beneficial agent at a zero order rate of release for an increased length of time to a fluid environment of use, the diffusor comprising: a. a wall formed in part of a microporous polymer with the remaining part formed of a semipermeable polymer surrounding and forming; b. a compartment having an internal space; c. a beneficial agent in the compartment occupying part of the space; d. an osmotically effective solute in the compartment occupying the remainder of the space, said solute in contact with the part of the wall formed of a semipermeable polymer; and, e. a flexible partition formed of a member selected from the group consisting of a semipermeable polymer and an impermeable polymer in the compartment, which partition is joined to the wall and placed between the beneficial agent and the osmotic solute.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
98 words
The diffusor for the controlled delivery of beneficial agent according to claim 1, wherein, when the diffusor is in the fluid environment fluid is imbided through the semipermeable wall into the space occupied by the solute, causing it to dissolve and form a solution that fills the space and moves the partition, with the partition compressing the beneficial agent against the microporous wall, thereby keeping it in a saturated state for an increased length of time and concomitantly increasing the length of time the beneficial agent is released from the diffusor at a zero order rate of release.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
45 words
The system for the controlled delivery of the beneficial agent according to claim 1, wherein the wall of the system distant from the partition and in contact with the member in the second space has a section or is totally formed of a semipermeable polymer.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
59 words
The system for the controlled delivery of the beneficial agent according to claim 1, wherein the wall of the system distant from the partition and in contact with the member in the second space has a section formed of a semipermeable polymer, the partition is formed of a semipermeable polymer and the second space houses an osmotically effective solute.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
38 words
A process for delaying the appearance of a receding diffusional boundary layer according to claim 1, wherein the microporous wall has a section replaced with a semipermeable wall, which semipermeable wall is in contact with the second space.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
48 words
The diffusor for the controlled and continuous delivery of agent according to claim 1, wherein the environment of use is a human, the fluid is a biological fluid, the agent is a drug, and the diffusor is sized, shaped and structured for placement and retention in said environment.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
35 words
The diffusor for the controlled and continuous delivery of agent according to claim 1, wherein the micropaths in the wall are formed in the environment of use by fluid leaching a pore-former from the wall.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
42 words
The diffusor for the controlled and continuous delivery of a beneficial agent according to claim 1, wherein the agent is a member selected from the group consisting of tranquilizers, psychic energizers, analgesics, antipyretics, anti-inflammatories, hormones, oral drugs, vaginal drugs and ano-rectal drugs.
