Abstract

Abstract Controlled release articles which regulate the concentration of a surfactant compound at a useful level in an environment external to said articles are provided with a coating. The improved articles are especially useful in or on the bodies of animals, including humans, to provide immediate release of the coating and, thereafter, to provide controlled release of surfactants having biological activity, e.g., non-hormonal contraceptives.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 94 words
An article of manufacture especially adapted for use as a contraceptive, comprising: a. a stable, insoluble container, at least part of the wall of said container comprising a microporous cellulose membrane; b. a spermicidal alkylene oxide nonionic surfactant releasably affixed to the outer surface of the article; and c. a solution consisting essentially of: i. a micelle-forming spermicidal alkylene oxide nonionic surfactant compound, and ii. a solvent for said surfactant compound, comprising water, said solution having a concentration above the critical micelle concentration of the surfactant compound, said solution being enclosed within the container.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 94 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 17 words
An article according to claim 1 wherein the membrane substantially envelops the solution of micelle-forming surfactant compound.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 32 words
An article according to claim 1 wherein the nonionic surfactant releasably affixed to the outer surface of the article is the condensation product of polyethylene oxide with an alcohol or alkyl phenol.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 30 words
An article according to claim 1 wherein the surfactant compound enclosed within the container is characterized by a critical micelle concentration of at most about 1× 10 - 3 Molar.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 36 words
An article according to claim 4 wherein the combination of surfactant solution and membrane exhibits a monomer transport curve having a ratio of slopes S 2 /S 1 in the range of 0 to about 0.1.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 16 words
An article according to claim 5 wherein the surfactant has an R value greater than 1.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
An article according to claim 1 wherein the nonionic surfactant enclosed within the container is selected from the ethylene oxide condensates of aliphatic alcohols, or mixtures thereof.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 16 words
An article according to claim 7 wherein the nonionic surfactant is C 10 EO 5 .
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 16 words
An article according to claim 7 wherein the nonionic surfactant is C 10 EO 6 .
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 70 words
An article according to claim 7 wherein the solution within the container consists essentially of a nonionic surfactant selected from C 10 EO 5 , or C 10 EO 6 , or mixtures thereof; wherein the solvent is water; wherein the container comprises a microporous, water-swollen cellulose membrane having a dry thickness of ca. 5-25μ and a swollen thickness of ca. 10-50μ; and wherein said container substantially envelops said solution.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 28 words
An article according to claim 10 wherein a unit dose of a water-soluble alkylene oxide nonionic spermicidal surfactant is releasably affixed to the outer surface of the article.
