Abstract

Abstract Useful surgical elements consist of a sterile synthetic copolymer containing, by mole percent, about 15 to 85% glycolic acid and 85 to 15% lactic acid, which has enhanced tissue absorption as compared with polylactic acid and enhanced solubility in organic solvents as compared with polyglycolic acid and hence can be cast into sheets during preparation and implantation. Such surgical element may be used alone or in combination with polyglycolic acid or a coating for polyglycolic acid surgical elements. Other comonomers may be introduced into the system.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 105 words
A PROCESS FOR REDUCING THE CAPILLARITY OF A MULTIFILAMENT POLYGLYCOLIC ACID SURGICAL SUTURE COMPRISING CONTACTING A MULTIFILAMENT POLYGLYCOLIC ACID STRAND WITH AN ORGANIC SOLVENT SOLUTION OF A COPOLYMER OF 15 TO 85 MOLE PERCENT GLYCOLIC ACID AND 85 TO 15 MOLE PERCENT LACTIC ACID, THEREBY FILLING THE INTERSTICES OF SAID MULTIFILAMENT POLYGLYCOLIC ACID STRAND WITH THE SAID SOLUTION, EVAPORATING OFF THE SOLVENT, AND THEREBY LEAVING A STIFFENING AND CAPILLARITY REDUCING QUANTITY OF SAID COPOLYMER ON THE MULTIFILAMENT POLYGLYCOLIC ACID STRAND, THUS FORMING A SURGICAL SUTURE, SAID MULTIFILAMENT POLYGLYCOLIC ACID STRAND BEING INSOLUBLE IN SAID ORGANIC SOLVENT AND SAID COPOLYMER BEING SOLUBLE IN SAID ORGANIC SOLVENT.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 105 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 24 words
The process of claim 1 in which the solvent is selected from the medically accepted organic solvents group consisting of xylene, toluene and chloroform.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 116 words
A process for reducing the capillarity of a multifilament polyglycolic acid surgical suture comprising contacting a multifilament polyglycolic acid strand with a solution of a copolymer of 15 to 85 mole percent glycolic acid and 85 to 15 mole percent lactic acid in a medically acceptable organic solvent selected from the group consisting of xyleNe, toluene and chloroform, thereby filling the interstices of said multifilament polyglycolic acid strand with the said solution, evaporating off said solvent, thereby leaving a stiffening and capillarity reducing quantity of said copolymer on the multifilament polyglycolic acid strand, thus forming a surgical suture, said multifilament polyglycolic acid strand being insoluble in said solvent and said copolymer being soluble in said solvent.
Claim 5
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 73 words
A process for reducing the capillarity of a multifilament polyglycolic acid surgical suture comprising winding a multifilament polyglycolic acid strand on a frame, dipping said strand on said frame in a solution of a 50:50 mole percent copolymer of lactic acid and glycolic acid in xylene, and drying off the xylene, thereby leaving a stiffening and capillarity reducing quantity of said copolymer on said polyglycolic acid strand, thus forming a stiffened surgical suture.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 73 words
A process for reducing the capillarity of a multifilament polyglycolic acid surgical suture comprising winding a multifilament polyglycolic acid strand on a frame, dipping said strand on said frame in a solution of a 50:50 mole percent copolymer of lactic acid and glycolic acid in xylene, and drying off the xylene, thereby leaving a stiffening and capillarity reducing quantity of said copolymer on said polyglycolic acid strand, thus forming a stiffened surgical suture.
