Abstract

Abstract A periodic dielectric waveguide capable of supporting backward parametric interactions comprises in one embodiment a substrate having an index of refraction ns and a layer of nonlinear dielectric material overlaid thereon. A region of the nonlinear material is treated to have a periodic index of refraction variation, the period of the variation d being given by the equation: D 2 pi M/ Beta 1 + Beta 2 + Beta 3 WHERE Beta 1, Beta 2, AND Beta 3 ARE RESPECTIVELY THE PROPAGATION CONSTANTS OF THE THREE ANGLE FREQUENCIES omega 1, omega 2, AND omega 3 TRAVELING IN THE GUIDE.
