Abstract 4- ALKYLPROLINES ARE PREPARED IN TELATIVELY HIGH YIELDS BY REACTING A 2-ALKYLACROLEIN WITH A DIALKY N-ALKANOYLAMIDOMALONATE, DEHYDRATING THE OBTAINED 4-ALKYLPYRROLIDINE, AND THEREAFTER HYDROLYZING, DECARBOXYLATING, AND CATALYTICALLY HYDROGENATING THE PRODUCED 4-ALKYL-4-PYRROLINE. THE 4-ALKYL-PROLINES ARE USEFUL AS INTERMEDIATES FOR THE PREPARATION OF 4-ALKYL-PROLINES ARE USEFUL AS INTERMEDIATES FOR THE PREPARATION OF 4-ALKYLHYGRIC ACIDS WHICH, IN TURN, ARE A SOURCE OF COMPONENT ACIDS THAT ARE REACTED WITH AMINO SUGARS TO FORM ANTIBIOTICS OF THE LINCOMYCIN TYPE.
