Abstract METAL PARTS ARE BUTT WELDED BY RECIPROCATORY MOTION. THE AXIAL LOAD, OSCILLATORY SPEED AND TIME OF ENGAGEMENT ARE CONTROLLED TO PRODUCE A STABILIZED PLASTIC CONDITION AND A UNIFORM BOND OF HIGH QUALITY ACROSS THE ENTIRE INTERFACE. THE ACCELERATION FORCES OF THE MECHANISM IMPARTING THE RECIPROCATORY MOTION ARE DYNAMICALLY BALANCED BY MOVING BALANCING MECHANISM IN OPPOSITION TO THE MOTION IMPARTING MECHANISM.
