Abstract

Abstract A tracer control system is provided for use in conjunction with turning machine tools, such as horizontal lathes or vertical turret lathes. The system of the invention provides an automatic control for the cutting tool of the machine along any desired two-dimensional path, as determined by the engagement of a sensing head stylus with the edge of a flat template. The control system to be described includes unique control circuitry which permits the turning speed of the machine to increase as the cutting tool is moved towards the center of rotation, and at the same time controls the rate of movement of the cutting tool tangent to the surface of the workpiece so that constant cutting speed may be achieved with a constant chip thickness as the cutting tool traverses the workpiece.
