Binary oil-in-water surface coating emulsions
Abstract
Abstract Oil in water emulsions comprise (a) 100 parts by weight of a fatty acid ester of a copolymer of (i) 40 to 15 weight per cent. of allyl alcohol, methallyl alcohol or a mixture thereof, and (ii) 60 to 85 weight per cent. of styrene or a nuclear substituted styrene in which the nuclear substituents are alkyl groups having 1 to 4 carbon atoms and/or chlorine atoms or a mixture of such styrenes, said copolymer having, before esterification, an hydroxyl content of 4 to 7.5 weight per cent. and from 50 to 75% of the hydroxyl groups being esterified with a fatty acid containing 10 to 24 carbon atoms or a mixture of such acids, (b) a water-soluble salt of a fatty acid with ammonia or an amine present in such a proportion that a mixture of the esterified copolymer under (a) and the free acid would have an acid number of 2 to 12, said fatty acid having 10 to 24 carbon atoms and said amine boiling at a temperature not exceeding 450 DEG C., and (c) 65 to 900 parts by weight of water. The emulsions may also contain etherified triazine condensates which are reaction products of at least two molar proportions of a monohydric alcohol containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms with a condensate of 3 to 6 molar proportions of formaldehyde with an aminotriazine; emulsions and latices of other synthetic resins and rubbers; conventional driers and pigments, fillers, plasticizers and stabilizers. Long lists of suitable reactants are given and examples describe the esterification of styrene-allyl alcohol copolymers with excess (I, IV, V and VI) soya fatty acids, (II) linseed fatty acids and (III and VII) tall oil fatty acids and the addition to the products of aqueous ammonia and cobalt naphthenate; the esterification of styrene-allyl alcohol copolymers with (VIII) a mixture of soya fatty acids and lauric acid, (X) linseed fatty acids and (XI) tall oil fatty acids and the addition to the products of aqueous ammonia, butylated melamineformaldehyde condensates and cobalt naphthenate; (IX) the esterification of a styrene-allyl alcohol copolymer with soya fatty acids and the addition of aqueous ammonia, a butylated benzo-guanamine-formaldehyde condensate modified with toluene sulphonamide, soya fatty acids, morpholine and cobalt naphthenate; the esterification of styrene-allyl alcohol copolymers with (XII, XIII and XIV) soya fatty acids and the addition of aqueous ammonia, isopropylated guanamine-formaldehyde condensates, soya fatty acids, morpholine and cobalt naphthenate; and (XV) the esterification of a styrene-allyl alcohol copolymer with tall oil fatty acids and the addition of aqueous ammonia, a butylated melamine-formaldehyde condensate, soya fatty acids, morpholine and cobalt naphthenate. The compositions may be used for coating metals, glass, wood, masonry, plaster, textiles and resinous and asphaltic matrices, and the coatings cured by heating. Specifications 787,420 and 924,770 are referred to.
