Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To make the outputted polarized light stable and to obtaind transmission characteristics with high quality, by twisting a single mode optical line equal to or more than the minimum twist rate, in a transmission system using the single mode optical line. CONSTITUTION:A light from a light source can be interfered 10 with linear polarization is modulated at an optical transmission section 9 with a signal from an incident terminal 11. This optical signal is transmitted on a single mode optical line 14 twisted equal to or more than the minimum twist rate phit0 and given to a optical reception section 15. Since the incident linearly polarized light is obtained at an emission end 16 of the line 14 with twist, and not obtained as an elliptically polarized light, no phase compensation is required and the loss to the optical reception signal can be reduced. Further, to coincide the polarized angle at the output terminal 16 of the line 14 to be twisted with the polarized angle of a local oscillating light source 17, it is done by changing the polarized angle of the local oscillation light source 17 and the efficiency of detection can not be decreased. Further, since the deterioration of white light polarization is less, the generation of twist and noise are lessened.
