Improvements relating to couplings for electric cables
Abstract
Abstract 594,922. Two-part couplings. HENLEY'S TELEGRAPH WORKS CO., Ltd., W. T., RELIANCE ELECTRICAL WIRE CO., Ltd., and DAVIS, H. July 4, 1945, No. 17025. Addition to 547,262. [Class 38 (i)] A detachable two-part cable coupling as claimed in the parent Specification comprises plug-and-socket members containing pairs of co-operating corrugated blade contacts 2, 2a dispersed one on each side of insulating strips 3, 3a, and secured by insulated rivets 4, 4a. The tails of the conductors of the rubber-sheathed cables 7, 7a are left slightly slack when soldered to the shanks of the contacts 2, 2a, the interlocking surfaces of which are held together by the pressure of the sleeves 8, 8a, of soft rubber or other resilient material moulded in situ onto the cable sheaths and the contact members, so that tensile stresses in the coupling are transferred from the contacts to the sleeves and cable sheaths, instead of being carried by the conductors. The socket member 8a has a shroud 9 projecting beyond the ends of the contact blades and surrounding a cylindrical aperture having a circumferential groove 11, which engages with a snap action a circumferential bead at the front end of the co-acting plug 10. Ribs 14, 14a are moulded on each part of the coupling to indicate the correct alignment for engagement, In a modification (not shown), intended to separate with very little pull, the socket member has a tapered conical aperture receiving a corresponding conical plug, the two parts being held in engagement solely by the contact blades. In further modifications (not shown), the socket member is combined with a two-pin plug member, either integrally or through a short length of cable, and the plug member is combined integrally with a lamp holder.
