An improved manufacture of hydrocarbon polymers
Abstract
Abstract 513,521. Lubricating oils and motor fuels. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Feb. 12, 1938, No. 4485. Convention date, April 9, 1937. Samples furnished. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] The viscosity of mineral lubricating oils is increased, and motor fuels and greases are thickened, by the admixture therewith of a copolymer of an aliphatic iso-mono-olefine, e.g., isobutylene or methyl-2 butene-1, and a hydrocarbon having a conjugated system of alternate single and double bonds and including at least one olefinic linkage, e.g., butadiene, isoprene or styrene. When added to lubricating oils, the copolymers may be used in conjunction with other materials, e.g., oxidation inhibitors, pour point depressors, graphite, zinc oxide and metal soaps. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the copolymer may be prepared by polymerizing a mixture of an aliphatic olefine having more than two carbon atoms and a reactive organic compound capable of polymerization. Specified aliphatic olefines include propylene, pentenes, tri-isobutylene, cracked wax and dechlorinated wax, and specified organic compounds capable of polymerization include vinyl compounds such as halides, esters and ethers, acrylic compounds, acetylene compounds, alkylene oxides, aldehydes, divinyl benzene, allene, allylene, eugenol and saffrole. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
