Abstract

Abstract 472,902. Lampshades. CURTIS, A. H. March 30, 1936, No. 9364. [Class 75 (ii)] A lampshade comprises a relatively rigid sheet-metal binding strip of channel section secured upon one edge, or upon each of two opposite edges, of a relatively weak flexible sheet, the binding strip then being bent into a closed ring and its meeting ends secured together. The shade may be circular, square, or triangular in cross-section, and it may be of cylindrical, frustoconical, prismatic, or pyramidal form. The binding strip may be plated or anodized, whilst the flexible sheet material may comprise a plurality of superposed layers of paper, cellulose acetate, or like coloured or uncoloured, transparent or translucent material, one or more of which bears designs or advertising matter. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the flexible sheet material 1 is provided with metal binding strips 5, 6, the ends of which are secured together by means of tongue-and-slot connections 10. The upper strip 5 has its outer wall turned upon itself to present a blunt edge, and its inner wall is formed with spring lugs 7 having recesses or apertures to receive the ends of arms 8 of a wire or other framework which secures the shade to an electric lamp holder or the like. The lower strip 6 together with the enclosed sheet material 1 is doubled upon itself and serves also to secure a sheet 12 which closes the bottom of the shade. In the form shown in Fig. 3, a wire 14 is inserted in the binding strip 13 and is formed at intervals with loops 15 which project inwardly through the strip to receive a wire or like framework 16. One end 18 of the wire 14 is turned over to secure together the ends of the strip 13, one end of which is formed with a projection 17 which enters a recess in the other end.
