Claim 1
Independent Claim
197 words
A surgical instrument of the type comprising coaxial inner and outer tubes, having coacting cutting edges in a distal region, the inner tube being rotatably driven while the outer tube is stationary, and means to maintain fluid flow from the cutting region through the instrument, wherein a limited segment of the side of each tube is open, said opening extending to the distal end of said tube, and at least the portion of the end of each tube that corresponds with the respective opening in the side of the tube. being open, whereby at a first position of rotation of the inner tube, body tissue can protrude through the volume of the inner tube, portions of said tubes bounding said side openings cooperatively defining an initial tissuepenetrating point where portions of the tubes first come together during rotation of said inner tube, said point located at the distal extremity of the sides of the tubes, and cutting edges extend from said initial tissue-penetrating point longitudinally along the sides of the tubes, whereby following initiation of gripping and cutting at said point located inwardly on the tissue from an exposed edge of the tissue, cutting can proceed proximally.

Dependent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
104 words
The instrument according to claim 1 characterized in that a limited segment only of the distal end of each tube is open, said openings corresponding to the segments of the sides of the tubes that are open, and cutting edges extend from said initial tissue-penetrating point, both transversely across the ends and longitudinally along the side of each tube, whereby following initiation of gripping and cutting at said point located inwardly on the tissue from an exposed edge of the tissue, cutting can proceed in two directions at substantial angles to one another toward the exposed edge of the tissue to complete the cut.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
60 words
The surgical instrument of claim 1 or 2 wherein viewed from the side of the tubes, the initial tissue-penetrating point at the distal extremity of the side of the tubes is characterized by the intersection of elongated edges on the respective tubes, said edges set at an angle diverging from each other in the direction away from the distal end.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
41 words
The surgical instrument of claim 3 characterized in that a cutting edge along the side of a tube extends in a plane angled to the plane which projects through the axis of the tube and through the respective initial tissue-penetrating point.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
52 words
The surgical instrument of any of the preceding claims characterized in that said tubes cooperatively define two of said initial tissue penetrating points corresponding to respectively opposite directions of rotation, both of said points 4 GB 2 042 902 A 4 located at the distal extremity of the sides of the tubes.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
42 words
The surgical instrument of claim 3, 4, or 5 wherein each tube viewed from the side is characterized by defining a pair of elongated cutting edges which diverge from each other longitudinally in the direction away from their respective initial tissue-penetrating points.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
46 words
The surgical instrument of claim 6 characterized in that the proximal regions of said pair of elongated cutting edges of a tube are joined by a transversely extending proximal edge, said cutting edges and said proximal edge bounding an opening in the side of the tube.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
34 words
The instrument of any of the foregoing claims wherein, viewed from the end of the tubes, the initial tissue-penetrating point is characterized 40 by oppositely directed, pointed portions of the end of the tubes.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
28 words
The instrument of any of the foregoing claims characterized in that said initial tissue penetrating point is defined by pointed portions of 45 said tubes that are cusp-shaped.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
45 words
The surgical instrument of claim 9 characterized in that the instrument defines two of said initial tissue-penetrating points, corresponding to respectively opposite directions of rotation, and wherein, viewed from the end of the tubes, both of said initial tissuepenetrating points are defined by cusp-shaped portions.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
52 words
The surgical instrument of any of the foregoing claims characterized in that at their ends the tubes have substantially flat end closures set substantially at a right angle to the axes of the tubes and the mating cutting edges in the ends of said tubes are defined by said flat ends closures.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
46 words
The instrument of any of the foregoing claims 2-11 having mating cutting edges in the ends of said tubes, characterized in that said mating cutting edges are in the form of substantially circular arcs having centers that are eccentric relative to the axes of the tubes.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
49 words
A surgical instrument substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Printed for Her Majesty's Stationery Office by the Courier Press, Leamington Spa, 1980. Published by the Patent Office, 25 Southampton Buildings, London, WC2A 1 AY, from which copies may be obtained. ji
