Abstract

Abstract 13,170. H³lsmeyer, C. June 10. Signalling approach of trains.-Hertzian-wave signalling-apparatus is used to indicate the presence of a metallic body such as a train in the line of projection of such waves. The waves given out by a transmitter on one train are reflected by the metallic body into a receiver on the same train. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, an induction coil d, the primary of which is actuated from any suitable source, is secured in a bowl c mounted in gimbals. Conductors from the secondary coil pass up a tube e to insulated rings f, f<1> on which bear brushes k, i connected to the terminals of a transmitter h. The tube e is surrounded by a tube g formed with a funnel-shaped reflector and screen l, which directs the waves to the point desired. Above the transmitter is arranged a receiver wire or wires o connected through an insulated wire to a coherer &c. adapted to give a visible or audible signal, such as a drop signal. The wires o are cut off from waves other than those from the transmitter h, by a semi-cylindrical extension n of the tube g. A metal screen t may be arranged above the transmitter. The transmitter and receiver may be tuned to each other. The tube g is preferably rotated so as to direct the waves to each point of the compass in turn, by suitable electric or other means, of which only the driving-wheel q is shown. The wheel q may be rotated synchronously with another disc arranged conveniently for the officer in charge, so that the direction from which a warning comes is made known at once. The casing n may be dispensed with, and the wires o may be supported from other parts.
