Abstract 1477665 Catheters INTERNATIONAL PAPER CO 24 April. 1974 [8 May 1973] 17903/74 Heading A5R [Also in Division B5] A urinary retention catheter comprises an extruded silicone rubber shaft 12 having a drainage lumen 13, and an inflation lumen 14 communicating with the shaft exterior through an aperture (15) Fig. 3, (not shown), near the distal end of said shaft, a tip 90 moulded to said distal end and having a hollow portion 94 therein communicating with said drainage lumen, drainage eyes 91, 92 through said tip, and a balloon sleeve 50 having one end thereof moulded to shaft on the proximal side of said aperture and the other end thereof bonded to and received in a groove (93) in said tip. The modulus of elasticity of said balloon sleeve is less than that of the tip and preferably the sleeve and tip are also of silicone rubber, the cross-sectional width of the sleeve at its bonded end being less than that of the tip. In alternative embodiments, said other end of the sleeve may be bonded to the shaft on the distal side of said aperture, or the sleeve may be moulded to the shaft on the distal side of said aperture and bonded thereto on the proximal side thereof, a groove (93') Fig. 8, (not shown), being provided in the shaft instead of in the tip in these embodiments. The shaft, sleeve, and tip are initially only partially cured, being completely cured after said sleeve has been bonded to the catheter. The balloon sleeve is insert-moulded to the shaft i.e. the shaft is inserted into a mould and the sleeve is formed within the mould and simultaneously moulded to the shaft. The tip also is insert-moulded to the shaft.
