Abstract

Abstract 1288648 Pipe joints SERVOTOMIC Ltd 3 Nov 1970 [13 Dec 1969] 60891/69 Heading F2G In a method of pipe jointing the pipe end is received in a socket with an interference fit and secured with a curable adhesive. As shown, the pipe 14 is knurled or screw-threaded over a portion 15, leaving plain end portion 17 which provides a lead-in for inserting the pipe. Surface protuberances (19) (Fig. 4, not shown) of the knurling are upset by the sleeve bore surface (20) when pipe and sleeve 10 are telescoped together, which is done manually, but the outside sleeve surface 24 and the pipe bore are not deformed. Prior to inserting the pipe, the co-operating surfaces of the sleeve and pipe, which may be of bare or plated steel, are degreased by applying a primer and coated with a curable adhesive such as a polyester or an acrylic resin which is not inhibited from polymerizing, and will not be subsequently depolymerized, by the pipe and sleeve material. After telescoping the pipe and sleeve, the adhesive fills the gaps (23) (Fig. 4, not shown) between the upset protruberances. In modifications of the method, either or both the pipe surface and the sleeve bore may be knurled or threaded. The method may be adopted in the installation of a system of pipework such as a central heating system (Fig. 5, not shown). The mechanical strength of the joint enables the installation to proceed without the delay of waiting for the adhesive in each joint to cure before the next joint is made. Other applications include joining a pipe portion to the hollow spigot of a valve.
