Abstract

Abstract A minimally invasive biopsy device (10) includes a cylindrical retractor (12) and a cylindrical cutting tool (14) slidingly engaged within the cylindrical retractor (12). The cylindrical retractor (12) is adapted for insertion in an incision (43) above a lesion (61) to be excised, and separates the walls of the incision (43) to provide access to the tissue to be excised. The cylindrical cutting tool (12) has a cutting means (21) which makes a cylindrical incision around the tissue to be excised. The tissue can then be accurately and quickly removed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 191 words
A minimally Invasive biopsy device for excising a soft tissue lesion along with a margin of tissue around the lesion, said device comprising (a) a cylindrical retractor having a distal end to be inserted into an incision and a proximal end to extend out of the incision, and (b) a cylindrical cutting tool that is slidingly engaged within the cylindrical retractor, said cylindrical retractor having a length sufficient to allow its distal end to be placed within a distance from the lesion that is substantially equal to the margin while allowing the proximal end to extend out of the incision and having an inside diameter sufficient to accept the cylindrical cutting tool; said cylindrical cutting tool having a cutting means on its distal end and having a length that is sufficient to allow the distal cutting means to be extended beyond the lesion by a distance equal to the margin, while allowing the proximal end to remain at least substantially even with the proximal end of the cylindrical retractor and having an inside diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the lesion plus the margins on each side of the legion.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 43 words
The minimally invasive biopsy device of claim 1, which further comprises a conductive rod extending longitudinally through the wall of the cylindrical cutting tool and terminating at the distal end with an electrocautery tip and wherein the cutting means comprises said electrocautery tip.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 27 words
The minimally invasive biopsy device of claim 1, wherein the cutting means comprises a knife edge which extends beyond the distal end of the cylindrical cutting tool.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 30 words
The minimally invasive biopsy device of claim 1, wherein the cutting means comprises a sharpened cutting edge extending around the circumference of the distal end of the cylindrical cutting tool.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 14 words
The minimally invasive biopsy device of claim 2, wherein the electrocautery tip is retractable.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
The minimally invasive biopsy device of claim 5, wherein the electrocautery tip curves inward when extended beyond the distal end of the cylindrical cutting tool.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 28 words
The minimally invasive biopsy device of claim 1, wherein the cylindrical retractor has a lip which extends around the circumference of the proximal end of the cylindrical retractor.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 30 words
The minimally invasive biopsy device of claim 1, wherein the cylindrical cutting tool has a lip which extends around the circumference of he proximal end of the cylindrical cutting tool.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 38 words
The minimally invasive biopsy device of claim 1, wherein the inside diameter of the cylindrical cutting tool is substantially equal to the diameter of the lesion plus the margins on each side of the legion to be excised.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 42 words
The minimally invasive biopsy device of claim 1, wherein the length of the cylindrical cutting tool, including the cutting means, is sufficient to permit a cylindrical Incision to extend by about the distance of one margin beyond the lesion to be excised.
