Abstract

Abstract A surgical incision member (22) is provided including a body portion (22b) defining first and second longitudinal ends, tissue penetrating portion (22a) adjacent each longitudinal end of the body portion (22b), suture attachment structure (36) intermediate the tissue penetrating portions (22a), and a suture (37) attached to the suture attachment structure (36). A method is also provided wherein the suture (37) is attached to the surgical incision member (22) by adhesives or by crimping.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 42 words
A surgical incision member comprising: a curved body portion; tissue penetrating portions adjacent each end of the body; a suture attachment aperture intermediate the tissue penetrating portions; and at least one protrusion extending from the body portion adjacent the suture attachment aperture.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 55 words
A surgical incision member as in claim 1, further comprising at least one recess along an outer surface of the body portion, the outer surface corresponding to one side of the body portion in which the suture attachment aperture extends and the at least one recess is transverse to a center axis of the aperture.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 69 words
A surgical incision member as in any of the preceding claims, wherein the body is substantially circular in cross-section and the at least one protrusion is configured to conform to at least a portion of the circular body, such that upon compression of the at least one protrusion material of the body portion is displaced into the suture attachment aperture yield a substantially uniform cross-section along the body portion.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 25 words
A surgical incision member as in any of the preceding claims, further comprising a chamfer formed in the body portion adjacent the suture attachment aperture.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 26 words
A surgical incision member as in any of the preceding claims, further comprising apparatus engagement structure formed in the body portion adjacent the tissue penetrating portions.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 31 words
A surgical incision member as in any of the preceding claims, wherein the apparatus engagement structure comprises a substantially transverse recess offset from a center longitudinal axis of the body portion.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 27 words
A surgical incision member as in any of the preceding claims, wherein the tissue penetrating portions comprise points formed at each longitudinal end of the body portion.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 21 words
A surgical incision member as in any of the preceding claims, further comprising a suture affixed in the suture attachment aperture.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 21 words
A surgical incision member as in any of the preceding claims, further comprising a suture with a suture anchor attached thereto.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 95 words
A method for attaching a suture to a surgical incision member, comprising: providing a surgical incision member having a body portion, tissue penetrating portion adjacent each end of the body portion, a suture attachment aperture intermediate the tissue penetrating portions and at least one protrusion extending from the body portion adjacent the suture attachment aperture; inserting a suture at least partially into the suture attachment aperture; and compressing the at least one protrusion such that a portion of the body is displaced to crimp the suture so as to secure the suture to the body.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 35 words
The method according to claim 10, wherein the step of compressing includes compressing the at least one protrusion to occupy the displaced portion of the body to yield a substantially uniform cross-section of the body.
