Abstract

Abstract A composite device suitable for use in detecting or determining the presence of components in liquids, which comprises a first (11) and a second (20) layer of porous material in contact with each other, a sample-receiving site (16), a reaction site (15) in communication with the sample-receiving site via the second layer, and, located in the layers, liquid barrier means (13) defining a liquid flow path, whereby liquid deposited at the sample-receiving site is transferred to the reaction site.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 79 words
A composite device suitable for use in detecting or determining the presence of components in liquids, which comprises a first (11) and a second (20) layer of porous material in contact with each other, a sample-receiving site (16), a reaction site (15) in communication with the sample-receiving site via the second layer, and, located in the layers, liquid barrier means (13) defining a liquid flow path, whereby liquid deposited at the sample-receiving site is transferred to the reaction site.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 79 words
A composite device suitable for use in detecting or determining the presence of components in liquids, which comprises a first (11) and a second (20) layer of porous material in contact with each other, a sample-receiving site (16), a reaction site (15) in communication with the sample-receiving site via the second layer, and, located in the layers, liquid barrier means (13) defining a liquid flow path, whereby liquid deposited at the sample-receiving site is transferred to the reaction site.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 13 words
The device of claim 1, wherein the porous material is flat and planar.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 29 words
The device of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the porous material is selected from polyamide, polytetrafluoroethylene, glass fibres, polyvinyl chloride, cellulose acetate, polyvinylidene difluoride, cellulose nitrate and polypropylene.
Claim 5
Independent Claim 26 words
The device of any preceding claim, wherein the sample-receiving site is on the first layer, and the reaction site is on the first or second layer.
Claim 6
Independent Claim 44 words
The device of any preceding claim, for the determination of one or more immunological components of a liquid, wherein one or more binding partners (17) of the immunologic component(s) to be determined is or are present at the reaction site or a plurality thereof.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 21 words
The device of claim 5, wherein the binding partner is an antibody and the component to be determined is an antigen.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 44 words
The device of claim 6, wherein the antibody or an antigen corresponding to the component to be determined is present in the second layer, in the liquid flow path prior to the reaction site, the antibody or antigen being conjugated to an indicator system.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 12 words
The device of claim 7, wherein the indicator system is colloidal gold.
Claim 10
Independent Claim 17 words
The device of any preceding claim, wherein the barrier means (13) comprises slots, discontinuities, welds or compressions.
Claim 11
Independent Claim 37 words
The device of any preceding claim, which comprises reactants disposed in the liquid flow path, prior to the reaction site, such that, when sufficient liquid flows along the path, the reactants are delivered to the reaction site.
