Abstract

Abstract A catheter (10) for facilitating the exchange of guidewires during the course of a transluminal angioplasty or related procedure which comprises an elongated, flexible, tubular member (12) having at least one lumen (18) running the full length thereof from its proximal end (14) to its distal end (16) and with at least three apertures (20, 22, 24) or ports extending through the wall thereof at longitudinally spaced locations near the distal end (16) of the tubular member (12). These ports (20, 22, 24) communicate with the lumen (18) of the tubular member (12) and a longitudinal slit (26) is also provided through the wall of the tubular member (12) connecting the most proximal port (20) to the next proximal port (22). The exchange catheter (10) may also include a proximal hub (28) connected to the proximal end (14) of the elongated plastic tube (12).

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 98 words
A guidewire exchange catheter (10), comprising: (a) an elongated flexible plastic tubular member (12) having a proximal end (14) and a distal end (16) with a first lumen (18) extending the entire length thereof and having at least three spaced-apart apertures (20, 22, 24) longitudinally aligned a relatively short distance from said distal end (16) and extending through the side wall of said tubular member (12) to said first lumen (18), with a slit (26) extending through said wall to said first lumen (18) between the most proximal (20) and second-most proximal (22) ones of said spaced-apart apertures.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 98 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 31 words
The guidewire exchange catheter (10) as in Claim 1 and further including a further lumen extending the entire length of said tubular member and generally parallel to said first lumen (18).
Claim 4
Independent Claim 357 words
A method for exchanging a first guidewire (36) used with a guide catheter (34) disposed within the vascular system of a living body for a second guidewire (38) comprising the steps of: (a) providing an elongated flexible plastic tubular member (12) having a proximal end (14) and a distal end (16) with a first lumen (18) extending the entire length thereof and having at least three spaced-apart apertures (20, 22, 24) longitudinally aligned a relatively short distance from said distal end (16) and extending through the side wall of said tubular member (12) to said first lumen (18), with a slit (26) extending through said wall to said first lumen (18) between the most proximal (20) and second-most proximal (22) ones of said spaced-apart apertures; (b) placing the distal end of said second guidewire (38) through said most proximal aperture (20) in said tubular member (12) and advance the distal end of said second guidewire (38) to said distal end (16) of said tubular member (12); (c) inserting the proximal end of said first guidewire (36) through the distal end (16) of said tubular member (12) through a portion of said first lumen (18) and out the most distal one (24) of said aperture; (d) advancing said tubular member (12) in the distal direction down said first guidewire (36) while restraining movement of said first guidewire (36) until said distal end (16) of said tubular member (12) is close to the distal end of said first guidewire (36) in said vascular system; (e) withdrawing said first guidewire (36) from said guide catheter (34); (f) restraining longitudinal movement of said second guidewire (38) while pulling said tubular member (12) proximally such that a portion of said second guidewire (38) passes through said slit (26) and until said second-most proximal aperture (22) is visible beyond the proximal end of said guide catheter (34); and (g) releasing the proximal end of said second guidewire (38) and removing the remaining distal portion (16) of said tubular member (12) from said guide catheter (34) and from said second guidewire (38) leaving said second guidewire (38) in place within said guide catheter (34).
