Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 19
Claim 1
Independent Claim 56 words
A prosthesis having a surface region which in use will be subject to corrosion or erosion which has implanted within it a material adapted to have a beneficial biocidal action when released into the body of a recipient of the prosthesis as a result of the corrosion or erosion of the said region of the prosthesis.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 56 words
A prosthesis having a surface region which in use will be subject to corrosion or erosion which has implanted within it a material adapted to have a beneficial biocidal action when released into the body of a recipient of the prosthesis as a result of the corrosion or erosion of the said region of the prosthesis.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 28 words
A prosthesis according to claim 1 wherein the said material has been caused to migrate into implanted region of the prosthesis by bombardment with a second ion species.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 47 words
A prosthesis according to claim 2 wherein the second ion species is such as to react with the material of which the prosthesis is made so as to form a dispersion of a wear resistant second phase material within the material of which the prosthesis is made.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 23 words
A prosthesis according to any of claims 1 to 3 wherein the said material having a beneficial biocidal action is a noble metal.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words
A prosthesis according to claim 4 wherein the noble metal is gold or silver.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 16 words
A prosthesis according to claim 2 wherein the second ion species is a light, ion species.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 22 words
A prosthesis according to claim 6 wherein the prosthesis is made of titanium and the second ion species is N⁺ or C⁺.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 60 words
A method of manufacturing a prosthesis according to claim 1 wherein there is included the operation of subjecting the said surface region of the prosthesis to bombardment by ions of the said material having a beneficial biocidal action until a dose of at least 10¹⁵ ions/cm² of the said material has been implanted into the said region of the prosthesis.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 40 words
A method according to claim 8 wherein there is included the further operation of subjecting the prosthesis to bombardment with ions of a second species such as to cause the ions of the said material to migrate into the prosthesis.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 40 words
A method according to claim 9 wherein the second ion species has an energy of more than 10 KeV and the bombardment is continued until an ion dose at least equal to that of the said material has been implanted.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 39 words
A method according to claim 10 wherein the bombardment with ions of the second species is carried out at a temperature at which vacancies in the crystal lattice of the material of which the prosthesis is made are mobile.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 15 words
A method according to claim 8 wherein the two ion bombardments are carried out simultaneously.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method according to claim 8 wherein the ions of the said material are implanted with an energy of the order of 100 KeV.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim 14 words
A method according to claim 8 wherein the said material is a noble metal.
Claim 16
Dependent Claim 14 words
A method according to claim 14 wherein the said material is silver or gold.
Claim 17
Dependent Claim 17 words
A method according to claim 9 wherein the second ion species is a light reactive ion species.
Claim 18
Dependent Claim 13 words
A method according to claim 16 wherein the prosthesis is made of titanium.
Claim 19
Dependent Claim 15 words
A method according to claim 16 wherein the second ion species is N⁺ or C⁺.
