Method of producing a bone replacement material
Abstract
In the process for the production of bone substitute material from collagen and hydroxyapatite, an aqueous solution of purified collagen is mixed with an amount of a crosslinking agent which partially crosslinks the collagen, and this mixture is then lyophilized. The wetting agent is dimensioned such that the collagen retains its absorbability and its absorption capacity against body fluids, but the material shows no undesirable side effects after the implantation. Less than 1% by weight of formaldehyde, based on the dry weight of collagen, and sintered apatite grains with a diameter of 50-300 μm are preferably used. Such bone material is firmer and less tearing than the known one and ensures good formation of the body's own bone tissue (induction) and replacement or substitution by the same.
