Abstract
Abstract The disclosures relates to an atherectomy device having a generally cylindrical housing (12) formed of a relatively rigid material. The housing has rounded distal and proximal end portions. The housing is formed with a cut-out (14) extending longitudinally of the housing on one side of the housing. An atheroma cutter (31) is disposed to the proximal end of the housing and is used for advancing the housing into the arterial passage. A flexible drive cable (41) extends through the flexible guide (36) and is connected to the atheroma cutter for operation of the atheroma cutter.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
112 words
In an atherectomy device for removal of material of an atheroma, a vessel, a generally cylindrical housing formed of a relatively rigid material, said housing having a rounded distal end portion, said housing being formed with a cut-out extending longitudinally of the housing on one side of the housing, a cutter disposed within the housing and movable in the housing longitudinally of the cut-out, a flexible torque tube secured to the housing, a torque cable disposed within the torque tube and secured to the cutter, and motive means secured to the torque cable for rotating the cutter and permitting rotation of the cutter while the cutter is moved longitudinally of the housing.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
74 words
A device as in Claim 1 together with an inflatable balloon carried by the housing in a region opposite the cut-out, a tube connected to the balloon and having a lumen therein in communication with the interior of the balloon and means for inflating the balloon so that the housing can be urged in a direction towards the atheroma to retain the housing in engagement with the atheroma during the operation of the cutter.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
36 words
An atherectomy device as in Claim wherein the means for providing a lumen in communication in the balloon is a separate flexible tube together with an additional tube enclosing the balloon tube and the torque tube.
Claim 5
Independent Claim
36 words
A device as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3 together with an adaptor secured to the torque tube and means for introducing a radiographic contrast liquid into the adapter and into the torque tube.
Claim 6
Independent Claim
38 words
A device as in any of claims 1 to 4 wherein said motive means includes an electric motor having an output shaft and; clutch means for connecting the output shaft of the electrical motor to the torque cable.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
90 words
A device as in any of claims. 1 to 5 together with first and second cylindrical members, the second cylindrical member being slidably mounted in the first cylindrical member, a motor carried by the second movable member, clutch means connecting the output shaft of the motor to the torque cable and means carried by the first and second cylindrical members permitting the first and second cylindrical members to be held by a single hand and permitting longitudinal movement of the second cylindrical member with respect to the first movable member.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
35 words
A device as in Claim 6 together with switch means carried by the second cylindrical member whereby the motor can be operated by the same hand that is holding the first and second cylindrical members.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
55 words
A device as in Claim 7 together with means carried by the second movable member for causing engagement and disengagement of the clutch means and means carried by the first and second cylindrical members to prevent accidental disengagement of the clutch means during the time that the cutter is being moved longitudinally of the housing.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
152 words
In a method for removing at least a portion of an atheroma using a cylindrical housing having a rounded distal end portion and having a cutout with a cutting device disposed in the cylindrical housing and movable longitudinally of the cutout, the method comprising advancing the housing into the vessel into a position so that it is generally in alignment with the portion: of the atheroma to be removed, yieldably urging the housing in a direction so that at least a portion of the atheroma is urged into the cutout provided in the housing, advancing the cutting device in the housing to remove at least a portion of the atheroma in the cutout while the housing is yieldably retained in engagement with the atheroma, storing the removed portion of the atheroma in the housing, retracting the housing from the arterial vessel, and removing the portion of the atheroma stored in the housing.
Claim 11
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
40 words
A method as in claim 9 wherein the steps are repeared to ramove additional portions of the atheroma until sufficient portions of the atheroma are removed to provide a relatively good flow passage in the arterial vessel through the atheroma.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
22 words
A method as in claim 9 or 10 together with the step of rotating the cutting device while it is being advanced.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
24 words
A method as in Claim 11 wherein the cutting device is rotated at a speed ranging from approximately 1,500 to 2,500 revolutions per minute.
