Abstract

Abstract A light-coloured, biocompatible porous composite material is disclosed for making in vivo implants. The material is obtained by forming a blend consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene fibers and a polytetrafluoroethylene resin binder, and a soluble, particulate pore-forming agent, e.g. sodium chloride, forming the blend into a mat which is then compacted and sintered to form a fused fiber/resin composite, and then leaching out the pore former, e.g. with water. Laminates of the porous composite are also described particularly with silicone rubber and with layers of the carbon fiber containing implant material described in USP 3 992 725.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 105 words
A porous composite material suitable for in vivo implantation characterised in that it is obtained by forming a blend of biocompatible resin fibers and a biocompatible resin binder, said blend containing from 50 - 9096, based on the volume of the blend, of a particulate pore-forming material, forming a mat from said blend, compacting the mat and sintering the compacted mat to form a fused composite of said fibers in a fused resin matrix, and finally leaching out the pore-forming material from the fused composite, wherein the blend consists of, apart from said pore-forming agent, fibers of polytetrafluoroethylene and particles of polytetrafluoroethylene as said binder.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 105 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
A material according to claim 1, characterised in that the volume ratio of resin to fiber in said blend is in the range 1:1 to 2.3:1.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 17 words
A material according to claim 1 or 2 characterised by a porosity of from 60-80% by volume.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 38 words
A material according to claim 1, 2 or 3 characterised in that the pores are formed by using, as the pore-forming agent, crystalline sodium chloride which is subsequently leached from fused composite using water as the leaching agent.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 29 words
A material according to any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the majority of the pores in the composite have a size in the range 80-400 microns.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 30 words
A porous laminate suitable for in vivo implantation, characterised in that it comprises at least one layer of a porous composite material according to any one of the preceding claims.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 30 words
A laminate according to claim 6 characterised in that it comprises a plurality of layers of a material as claimed in any one of claims 1 - 5 bonded together.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 56 words
A laminate according to claim 6 or 7, characterised in that it comprises at least one other layer which is comprised of a different or different blend of biocompatible fibers bonded with a biocompatible resin, said other layer having a porous structure and a critical surface tension in the range 35 - 80 dynes per centimetre.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 30 words
A laminate according to claim 8, characterised in that said other layer is comprised of a fused blend of polytetrafluoroethylene fibers and carbon fibers bonded with a biocompatible polytetrafluoroethylene resin.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 45 words
A laminate according to claim 8 or 9, characterised in that the said other layer has a greater proportion of porosity consisting of spheroidal and dendritic spaces than that of the said layer of material as claimed in any one of claims 1 - 5.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 38 words
A laminate according to claim 6, characterised in that it comprises a first layer of a material as claimed in any one of claims 1 - 5, and a second layer, bonded thereto, of a biocompatible silicone rubber.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 34 words
An implant for in vivo implantation comprising a tube of a material as claimed in any one of claims 1 - 5 or a laminate according to any one of claims 6 - 11.
