Abstract
Abstract The endoscope has an optical system housed in a protective sheath with a transparent section in the region of the lens. When the instrument is in use, the external surface may become stained by the tissue with which it is in contact and so the light transmission is reduced. To clean the outside surface, the sheath is rotated through a gear drive by a stepping motor fitted inside the handle of the instrument.
