Abstract
Abstract The implant consists of an inner, metallic-alloy core glued inside a porous ceramic mantle. Between them is a thin layer of glass, against which the patient's gums may settle without discomfort. The hollow inner core provides an anchorage for a prosthesis. The outer mantle is chemically prepared to contain pores of 100 mu diameter or more, and is a solid of revolution (cylinder or cone) so that a rotary drill can be used to make a cavity in the patient's jawbone into which the implant will fit closely. With such a close fit, the bone itself grows directly into the pores and secures the plant strongly.
