Method of sterilising material for implantation
Abstract
Abstract A method of sterilising material is disclosed, the material being for implantation into a human or animal body. The method includes treating the material with a substance non-reactive with a sterilising agent to be used, the substance being selected so as to maintain certain physical characteristics of the material such as flexibility and/or structure of cells or extra cellular material. Suitable substances include water soluble non-volatile substances for example glycerol. The method can be used on graphs for implantation or on biological material such as vascular tissue etc. and has the advantage that the substance does not react with water and so the material can be treated in solution without drying out or becoming brittle.
