Biodegradable drug delivery vascular stent
Abstract
Abstract A biodegradable stent (10, 50) for insertion into a lumen (13) of a vessel (12) of a living being includes a generally tubular biodegradable main body (11, 58). The main body (11, 58) includes an exterior surface (56) for contacting the vessel when the main body is placed in the living being and an interior surface (54) contacting a fluid passing through the lumen of the vessel. The tubular main body (11, 58) is made of an array of indivudal biodegradable materials having individual rates of degradation. The individual biodegradable materials incorporate a drug and release the drug into the lumen (13) of the vessel (12) at a rate controlled by the rate of degradation of the biodegradable materials.
