Balloon catheter
Abstract
A balloon catheter (10) for introduction into a body passage includes an elongated spiral spring (32) which defines an opening. This spiral spring (32) is covered with a silicone coating which includes an extensible sheath (42), a strain relief collar (54) fixed on the sheath, and a balloon tip (50, 52) fixed on the strain relief collar (54). The expandable sheath (42) and a portion of the elongated spiral spring (32) in combination form a support structure (30) which becomes substantially elongated when excessive stretching force is applied to the support structure (30) by shooting the balloon (50) through a passage of a body. As this support structure lengthens, the volume of the orifice of the spiral spring (32) increases. Preferably, the balloon (50) is in fluid communication with the orifice of the spiral spring (32) so that the volume of the balloon (50) is reduced when the support structure lengthens. The strain relief collar (54) is designed to extend away from the spring (32) to receive fluid from the balloon (50) to reduce the pressure of the fluid in the balloon (50) when this pressure in the ball exceeds a predetermined value. A preferred embodiment includes a flexible disc-shaped chamber (24) in fluid communication with the balloon (50), which chamber is sized to fit between a user's opposite thumb and finger.
