Abstract

Abstract A percutaneous filtration catheter used to entrap emboli from a patient's aorta and heart during cardiac surgery. The catheter has an elongate member, a proximal end, and a distal end. A balloon occluder is mounted on the distal end of the elongate member and an expandable filter is mounted on the elongate member distal the balloon occluder. Methods for using the devices are also disclosed herein.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 61 words
A method far heart surgery, comprising the steps of: inserting a catheter through an incision, the catheter having a balloon occluder and an expandable filter distal to the occluder, the expandable filter opening in a distally-facing direction; advancing a distal end of the catheter into the ascending aorta; expanding the filter; inflating the balloon occluder; and performing surgery on the heart.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 61 words
A method far heart surgery, comprising the steps of: inserting a catheter through an incision, the catheter having a balloon occluder and an expandable filter distal to the occluder, the expandable filter opening in a distally-facing direction; advancing a distal end of the catheter into the ascending aorta; expanding the filter; inflating the balloon occluder; and performing surgery on the heart.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 50 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the catheter comprises an elongate member having a proximal end and a distal end, and wherein the balloon occluder is mounted on a distal region of the elongate member, and the expandable filter is mounted on the elongate member distal the balloon occluder.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 18 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the incision is a percutaneous incision in a patient's femoral artery.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 18 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the incision is a percutaneous incision in a patient's intercostal space.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 19 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the filter is operable from the proximal end of the elongate member.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 13 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the surgery is heart valve repair.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 13 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the surgery is septal defect repair.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the expandable filter further comprises an expansion frame.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method of claim 8 , wherein the expansion frame comprises an umbrella frame.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 14 words
The method of claim 8 , wherein the expansion frame comprises an inflation seal.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 19 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the expandable filter is operable by manipulating at least one pull string.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 31 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the expandable filter has a proximal edge bonded circumferentially and continuously to the elongate member, and a distal edge which expands radially on activation.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 23 words
The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of inflating the balloon occluder is performed before the step of expanding the filter.
